birchwood kitchen

I’ve been trying to be good and pack my lunch lately, but there are so many good restaurants within blocks of my work.  Yesterday, I gave in and enjoyed an eggplant sandwich at Birchwood Kitchen (formerly Birchwood Cafe).  Their food is local, seasonal and sustainably produced but, more importantly, it’s delicious.  If you want a second (and hundredth) opinion on this, just check out their Yelp reviews.

They work with many (fairly) local farms, including Mint Creek Farms, Zingerman’s Creamery, La Quercia, Co-op Image’s Community Garden, and Metropolis Coffee.  The Birchwood Kitchen was nominated in TimeOut Chicago’s 2010 Eat Out Awards for ‘Best New Brunch’ spot, but they do a lot more than brunch.  And in the summer, they open up their back patio more than doubling their seating.  Check it out next time you’re hungry in Wicker Park.
